Two nuns in California allegedly stole more than $500,000 from the school they had been at for years, which they spent in casinos and on vacations.

Bank records show Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Lang had been embezzling funds from St. James Catholic School in Torrence for at least a decade, the Press-Telegram reported.

But officials from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles told parents and alumni of the school that auditors have not been able to trace all of the money trail.

Kreuper had retired as the school's principal earlier this year and she dealt with the school fees, which she allegedly withheld and deposited into an account only she and Chang knew about, the paper said.

While investigators found the two gave some of the stolen money back to the school, the rest was used for their 'personal gain.' Kreuper has admitted she took the money and expressed remorse.

The first two words alone are a shock to anyone who was taught by a Nun. “Nuns STOLE!” That’s much more than a Venial Sin right there! Maybe not quite a Mortal Sin though.

I wonder how much the two nuns won? $500,000 is a drop in the bucket for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The two nuns are indistinguishable from the general public. I think they traded their religious habits for gambling habits.

I think they are SJW’s, for sure.

Excerpt from “Who we Are”:
We believe in the interdependence of humanity and nature in the whole Earth community, and recognize our harmful impact.

We lead simple lifestyles and strive to foster the common good through parish service, adult education, spiritual direction and retreat work, direct service of the poor, and justice activities.

Back in the day, the nuns that taught me in school would not be caught dead stealing cash, though more than several were often in the cups here and there, and would give you quite a good thrashing when they divined that it was time to pay for your “sins”.

Had one 200 pound Polish nun ram my head into the blackboard in sixth grade which left a dent we all gazed upon as a warning for the rest of the school year. Must say I straightened up and became an A student as long as I stayed in religious school. So there’s that:)

I had a great aunt that was Mother Superior of some North Dakota convent.

She visited when I was small. Dad took her to Las Vegas (early 50's) Apparently caused quite a stir having a nun in full regalia walking through the casinos.

My dad is said to have surveyed the scene and asked my great aunt:

'See sister, this is the wages of sin.' And was instantly told to shut up by his aunt.

Here’s a story that make make you laugh – especially if you grew up in a Catholic school. Two nuns, who worked as teachers at a Catholic school in Torrance, have been rumbled after embezzling around half-a-million dollars in order to go on the trip of a lifetime to Las Vegas.

Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Chang reportedly used some of the money – which was taken from tuition, school fees and donations – to take trips and gamble at casinos in Nevada.

Kreuper had been a principal at St. James Catholic School in Torrance, while Chang had worked as a teacher there. Both sisters, described as being ‘best friends’, had taken retirement earlier this year, and the irregularities in the accounts came to light soon afterwards.

According to reports, the embezzlement of school funds had reportedly been going on ‘over a period of years’. What makes this even more brazen is that the parents were being led to believe the school had been operating on a ‘shoestring budget’. I bet they never imagined this would be the reason!

After being found out, both nuns have reportedly expressed remorse in regards to their actions. It looks like they’ve basically gotten away with it too, as neither the archdiocese or the church will be pursuing criminal charges against the pair.

As reported by the Press Telegram, the church’s monsignor Michael Meyers has revealed how an internal investigation was launched six months ago following a standard audit of procedures ‘in connection with a change in leadership’.

Around this time, a family requested a copy of a cheque made out to the school. It became apparent this had been deposited in a different bank account than the school’s account, and that’s where the sisters’ little ploy started to unravel.

It was at this point, Meyers noted, that Kreuper became ‘very nervous and very anxious’ regarding the impending financial review. As well she might! An independent forensic auditor was called in to take a closer look at what was going on, and this was when the extent of the embezzlement was revealed.

The embezzlement had been going on for at least a decade, with the figure given representing only what auditors were able to trace through the previous six years’ worth of bank records. This figure may not include other cash transactions, so it may actually be even higher.

According to the Press Telegram, nobody had been suspicious as both the school and the parish had always been in the black.

This might be my favorite story of all time. Someone needs to make this into a movie. Two Nun's On The Run.

While it’s a pretty funny story, as social media reaction would demonstrate, embezzling from a school is a crappy thing to do, and I hope none of the kids or their families suffered financially as a result of their actions.

Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Chang have reportedly now been moved from the ministry and have been placed in separate convents – you know, like they used to do in school with you and your troublemaker friend.
